The opening session of the postgraduate course “Criminal Law and Medicine: The great issues” will be held on February, 6, 2021 (9:30 am) via online platform.
Keynote speaker is Jonathan Herring (Exeter College/Law Faculty of Oxford University), who will deliver a lecture on “Medicine and the ethical conflicts of the pandemic crisis”.
The Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) co-organizes, together with the IDPCC and FDUL, the conference “The victim of crime and current criminal thinking”.
The event will be held at October 29, 2020, in webinar format (platform zoom).
Speakers are Antony Pemberton (keynote speaker), Director of the International Institute of Victimology at the University of Tilburg (Netherlands) and Associate Professor at the Institute of Criminology, Faculty of Law, University of Leuven (Belgium), as well as Maria Fernanda Palma (President of IDPCC) and João Lázaro (President of APAV).
Languages: Portuguese and English (keynote lecture), without translation.
The academic year 2020-2021 of the Doctoral Programme begins on October, 22 at 5:00 pm. In the opening session a lecture on “The Internet: A Philosophical Approach” will be given by Prof. Éric Guichard, da École Nationale Supérieur des Sciences de l’Information et des Bibilothèques de Lyon (France).
The session will be held online. Participation is open to the public but subject to registration.

It is hereby informed that, in line with the contingency plan of the Lisbon School of Law, face-to-face service at IDPCC is suspended by March, 10th. We continue to attend by e-mail or by phone, during normal hours.
For reasons related to general prevention, media coverage of the case and the emotional and traumatic impact of the facts on the community, states and the international community invest all their energy and resources in the “fight against terrorism”.
How to exercise a serious and effective Defence in this context? What challenges? How to overcome them?
A unique opportunity to listen and reflect with Nancy Hollander and Kenneth Carr, who have extensive experience in defending persons implicated or prosecuted in international cases related to the crime of terrorism, as well as persons labeled as “enemies of the state” (e.g. Chelsea Manning, a whistleblower of torture practices by the CIA as part of the “fight against terrorism”) in the US, the UK, and in European and International Courts (e.g. Al Nashiri v. Poland and Husayn (Abu Zubaydah v. Poland).

AI and Big Data: Everyday Life, Human Rights, Democracy
The issues surrounding artificial intelligence and big data are transformational. They generate dilemmas in the everyday life of societies, human rights, democracy, as well as in academic research. The cross-cutting nature of the topics highlights the importance of encouraging reflection and debate, thereby contributing to an understanding of these issues and of their impact on society. This is the main objective of this interdisciplinary conference, whose organizing committee brings together the Instituto de Ciências Sociais and other institutions in the University of Lisbon – the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Sciences and the Instituto Superior Técnico – the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (Lisbon Engineering Institute), and the Centro Nacional de Cibersegurança (National Cybersecurity Centre). It also intends to widen the debate, combining the academic component with outreach and involving a variety of other actors, such as the news media and ethics committees, amongst others.
