CALL FOR PAPERS

July 17-19, 2023: Closing conference of the ZiF Research Group “Economic and Legal Challenges in the Advent of Smart Products”

Organizers: Herbert Dawid (Bielefeld University), Sabine Gless (University of Basel), Gerd Muehlheusser (University of Hamburg)

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) of Bielefeld University is pleased to announce the closing conference of its Research Group “Economic and Legal Challenges in the Advent of Smart Products”. The conference aims to provide a platform for both disciplinary and in- terdisciplinary exchange on topics related to the development and legal regulation of smart products, as well as factors determining their acceptance and diffusion.

Questions of particular interest include:

  • How are innovation activities of firms affected by the legal environment?
  • How do specific features of smart products affect consumers’ trust in these products and

    their willingness to adopt?

  • What are the implications when decisions are taken by non-legal entities such as algo-

    rithms (e.g. pricing, court decisions, behavior of autonomous vehicles or household ro-

    bots)?

  • How to deal with the major regulatory challenges arising in the age of smart products?

    We are mainly inviting papers with an economic and/or legal perspective on such questions (thereby using various methodological approaches), but we also welcome submissions from other disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, engineering, and data sciences.

    FEES, COSTS AND REGISTRATION:

    There is no participation fee, but participants need to register for the conference in advance. ZiF will cover the cost for travel and accommodation for speakers and discussants according to its regulations.

    CONFERENCE FORMAT:
    The conference takes place in person at ZiF, but online participation will also be possible.

    SUBMISSIONS:

    Please submit either a full paper or an extended abstract (written in English, preferably as PDF) by March 1, 2023 to: smart-products@uni-bielefeld.de.

Book release

IDPCC/CIDPCC and Editora Almedina are organizing the release of the posthumous book of Maria do Céu Rueff on Law and Medicine, in a session dedicated to the author’s memory, at Almedina Atrium Saldanha (Lisbon), October 27, at 6pm.

In memoriam: Prof. Dr. Maria do Céu Rueff

Maria do Céu Rueff left us. The memory that the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminal Sciences will preserve from today is that of a profoundly human person. The word “human” expresses, as Hannah Arendt said, something that goes beyond the scientist’s conclusions, the philosopher’s truths, but rather refers to faculties of judgment and taste beyond any specialization, the quest for freedom, which she knew how to express by the restlessness of her voice, by the affection with that she knew how to take care of human relationships, to establish indestructible links because of her authenticity.

Her humanity was always present in her work, the work with which she began the systematic study of the medical law among us. She established herself as a notable researcher in medical law, respected both by doctors and jurists, who gave soul to the various courses organised by the IDPCC / CIDPCC, the first of which still with the late Professor Lobo Antunes with whom she had a deep scientific relationship.

We can only promise her, in this hour of deep sadness, following Mahler’s words, that what she believed in and what she desired will not be lost.
